Amber Pendants - Naturally Beautiful

By

An amber pendant is a naturally beautiful piece of jewelry that both looks and feels absolutely amazing. Amber is an excellent centerpiece for a pendant because it invokes images of nature all around us. This amazing material has been cherished for thousands of years because of its natural beauty. Amber pendants have been worn since times long before gold and silver jewelry became viable. When choosing an amber pendant, it's important to know a little about just what makes this kind of jewelry so precious. Learning about different types of amber will help you choose one that's appropriate for your own personal pendant. Different pendant settings are available as well. Knowing how to spot a real amber pendant from a fake one is also a critical skill to learn.

Amber Pendant Fundamentals

The most fundamental part of an amber pendant is obviously the amber itself. The kind of amber used will determine to a large extent the quality and value of the overall pendant. Learning the history of this wonderful material will help you appreciate the beauty of amber pendants all the more so.

Amber is, in essence, fossilized tree sap which has been cherished for thousands of years for its beautiful hue and tone. It's actually one of the few precious materials that's not a mineral. Amber shares this distinction with diamonds. Transparent amber looks the most alluring as it is the most pure.

The most magnificent amber pendants make use of amber that comes from specific places in the world. Baltic amber pendants are known for being a bit darker and more opaque in nature. At one point of time in history, Baltic amber was even called Prussian gold because it looked so resplendent.

Another famous variety is the Dominican amber pendant. Amber found in this region tends to be very transparent. The specific chemical makeup of the material lends it a little bit of fluorescence, which makes it seem to glow blue in certain kinds of light. Because of this, Dominican amber pendants are bewitching to behold.

The other fundamental component of an amber pendant is the material it's set in. Because of amber's color, most people prefer amber pendants which are made from silver or sterling silver. Silver amber pendants have a good dichotomy between the color of the metal and the hue of the centerpiece, creating an illustrious piece of jewelry that few can resist.

Baltic Amber Pendants

Baltic amber pendants come from the areas around the Baltic and North seas in Europe, traditionally. These pieces feature amber that has a much more heterogeneous nature than other varieties. This means that a Baltic amber pendant will appear to have swirls and variations. This can look exceptionally beautiful, which is why this kind of pendant is so highly valued. The cloudy nature means that Baltic amber pendants are less transparent than other varieties, making the pendant seem like it's holding a finely colored mineral more than anything else.

Green Amber Pendants

One variety of amber pendant which is much rarer makes use of green amber. This material looks exceptionally ravishing, especially when it is paired with finely polished sterling silver. The green hues of the centerpiece creates jewelry that looks as though it were making use of peridot gems. Green amber pendants come in a range of different hues, some deeper than others. It is quite difficult to find a pendant of this type in yellow gold, so you may need to have one custom made if that is your preference. SIlver amber pendants are much more popular in most varieties, but green amber more than others.
