Gold Rings

By

Gold rings have been used for thousands of years as elegant symbols of love, devotion, and friendship. People from all cultures have chosen gold rings for weddings, engagements, or just as a precious piece of jewelry. A plain band of gold has been the traditional wedding ring for centuries in many Western societies.

Gold rings come in many different styles and varieties, each crafted with its own purpose. Many contain precious or semi precious gemstones to create a beautiful and graceful piece of jewelry. While gold looks amazing with any particular gem, diamonds are among the most popular to use because of their natural fire and brilliance.

A gold ring is crafted using one of a few particular alloys of gold. Knowing the difference between different purities and alloys will enable you to better choose what kind of gold ring you like best. The most popular varieties include rose gold and white gold rings.

Gold Ring Alloys and Purities

The easiest way to distinguish one gold ring from another is to look at the kind of alloy or purity of the precious metal. This will help you determine just how valuable the gold ring really is. Purity can be determined by the carat number, while the alloy typically defines the look of the gold ring.

No gold ring uses pure gold because the metal is too soft, making it unsuitable for jewelry. Most gold rings are found using 18k, 14k, or 10k gold. The higher the number, the purer and more valuable the alloy. 18k gold rings are often reserved for the most exceptional pieces of jewelry - these typically include precious gemstones such as diamonds, rubies, or emeralds. 14k gold rings are the standard for most kinds of jewelry. If you're looking to cut corners, 10k gold still keeps the look and feel that this precious metal is known for. However, 10k gold rings are often considered cheap and less valuable than other varieties.

Other than yellow gold, the two common gold alloys used for rings are rose and white gold. Rose gold rings are known for their pinkish hue. These go great with many different kinds of precious and semi precious gemstones, or just by themselves. Rose gold heart rings are one particularly popular and cherished kind of jewelry.

White gold rings are an exceptionally popular choice for any application. Whether with a gemstone or without, a white gold ring always carries an elegance and class that other alloys can't seem to meet. White gold rings are often chosen with richly colored gemstones to create a vivid and stunning contrast.

Gold Diamond Rings

One popular choice for gold rings is to feature a diamond as the centerpiece of the jewelry. A gold diamond ring is often given as an engagement ring or for anniversaries. Yellow gold makes a perfect contrast with the colorless elegance of a diamond gemstone. For this reason, gold diamond rings tend to stand out, captivating all who look upon them with a dazzling allure.

Gold diamond rings look absolutely amazing no matter what particular alloy of gold is used for them. A white gold diamond ring is another popular selection due to its shimmering grace. The combination of the smooth tones of white gold with the fire of a diamond always makes for a beautiful piece of jewelry.

If you're interested in a gold diamond ring, make sure that the gold alloy matches the value of the gemstone. 10k gold rings may have attractive prices, but they are far less desirable than gold diamond rings that use 18k gold for their bands. A diamond ring is always a significant investment - don't settle for anything less than perfection.

Gold Wedding Rings

It's been the standard for hundreds if not thousands of years to use a gold ring to symbolize the unbreakable vows of a marriage. For this reason, gold weddings rings are chosen more often than any other precious metal band when the big day finally arrives. The traditions embodied in a gold wedding ring go back to ancient Egyptian times, and have been evolving ever since. The Irish, for instance, didn't view a marriage as valid at all if it was not sealed with a gold wedding ring.

B-E-A-Utiful...good article - especially about the alloy needed to turn pure gold into jewellery, although I disagree that 10K gold can be thought of as cheap. Gold is still gold. You can sell any K gold at http://www.postgoldforcash.com and get a good price. I have sold some great stuff there in the past and done well out of it.
